Thanks for subscribing to Work the Funnel, a newsletter by marketer Chantelle Marcelle (me!) that highlights best practices and trends in marketing.
Today's issue covers:
1. 4 Tips for getting started with marketing on Reddit
2. A list of subreddits you should check out
3. Other interesting stuff from around the web
Reddit might be my favorite social media platform.
It can be incredibly useful, if you know where to look.
So here are 4 tips to help you get started there with marketing (or even just for personal use):
1. Join a variety of subreddits (the name for topical Reddit communities). Scroll down to see my recommendations to get you started.
Don't post. Just absorb.
Learn the culture of different communities. What language do they use? What topics work best?
2. Make your message community-centric.
Use that research from step 1 to contextualize your post, ad or other engagement for the specific audience/subreddit you're targeting.
3. Build credibility.
Start by creating trust and a strong reputation as a valuable presence.
If you get tagged by other users as someone only interested in self promotion or who doesn't mesh with the subreddit culture, you'll find it impossible to engage.
4. And of course, know and explore your options.
Here are a few ways your brand can benefit from presence on Reddit:
- Create a brand or marketing profile that others can follow or use to learn about you.
- Create an entire dedicated subreddit of your own.
(Cloudflare uses theirs as a customer community. Disney also likely plays a role in moderating the Marvel Studios subreddit.)
- Partner with "influencers" or creators who will share content on various subreddits for you.
- Or simply run paid ads. Lowest lift here, but you need to strictly follow best practices for digital ads if you don't want to waste money.
I included 2 examples of Reddit ads below.
✅ The one on the left is quite good - Looks organic. The advertiser hosted an interview, aka an AMA (Ask Me Anything) directly on Reddit. That native looking content serves as the basis for the ad.
❌ The one on the right - Just another very boring B2B ad, complete with stock photo and flimsy CTA that delivers no clear value. (Online business needs = super generic...that could be almost anything.)
And here are some of the best subreddits to help you start your own love affair w/ Reddit:
